It’s summer. Kick back, relax, and enjoy some quality quite time in the office with fewer employees around to interrupt you from important business activities.
Summer is a fantastic time to regain that balance in your life, which for most of us, is an endless battle to maintain. I like to encourage families to conduct what’s called a “seven Fs exercise.” It assesses their degree of emphasis on these seven areas:
- Family
- Fitness
- Friends
- Firm
- Fun
- Finances
- Faith (if they want)
Ideally, each area should be approximately equal, like seven spokes on a wheel. When they’re equal, the wheel is a perfect circle and everything run smoothly. In practice, however, the wheel is usually uneven and wobbly leading to an unhealthy lifestyle, or at least to a balance issue.
Try this—take some time to rank each of the seven areas in terms of their overall importance in your life. Ask yourself, “What are my life priorities, truly?” Next, rank each area based on the emphasis you are currently placing on them. This asks, “Are my actions reflecting my priorities?” Follow this up by focusing on two or three of the seven areas that you want to improve on. Discuss these with a family member and hold each other accountable. Reassess every 90 days.
