“The average person goes to his grave with the music still in him.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes
What a sad illustration. Our society defines success as power, purpose, possession, popularity, and profile—what Dr. Ron Jenson calls the “Five Ps.” In reality, success that leads to a sense of significance has much more to do with relationships, energy exerted into noble causes, and what legacy you leave to your family. The drive to attain this kind of personal significance comes with an understanding of destiny, something that many founders strive for. They understand that they don’t just exist to make a dollar, but to make a difference. This is evident in their passion, their persistence, and their pride in what they do.
This same realization needs to be made by the successors in order to carry the business into the next generation.
