Dr. Blunden’s practical business experience includes general management, corporate strategy formulation and strategy implementation in startups, turnarounds and ongoing operations.
From 1976 through 1981 he had full operating and profit/loss responsibility for Brookfield Bros. Ltd., a Halifax building material retailer. Initially he guided the firm through a turnaround and doubling of sales to $3.5 million. The recession of 1981 with its declines in residential construction activity, rising interest rates, and an overstored industry led to his successful liquidation of the business.
Dr. Blunden’s consulting activities have spanned twenty-five years and a wide range of strategic issues. He has provided strategic planning and strategy formulation assistance to large firms and organizations; feasibility analysis and business planning services to entrepreneurs starting new businesses; turnaround and exit strategy assistance to businesses in trouble; and succession management counseling to family businesses.
Professor Blunden teaches Strategic Management, Strategy Formulation, Strategy Implementation, New Venture Creation and Managing the Family Enterprise at the Dalhousie Business School and internationally. He is an accomplished case writer and researcher; his cases have appeared in the leading Canadian strategic management text books.
